Meet the Eco Fashion Expo Team
Just a typical group of NYC students who are incredibly ambitious, witty, sarcastic (in the best way possible) and passionate about everything they do
Cofounder and Codirector
Angela dreamed of becoming a fashion designer since her middle school days, but it just seemed like an unreachable fantasy. Her parents wanted her to become a dentist, but after starting college in NYC, she thought, why not give the crazy dream a try? She shopped at H&M for the first time in college because there was a very limited selection of affordable clothes in Manhattan, but how a brand new shirt could cost only five dollars made her question the true cost of the clothing. She has committed much of her college career to learn and promote sustainable fashion. With her free time, she loves running, gallery hopping, upcycling, and just learning! She is currently double majoring in Economics and Chinese at Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College.
Cofounder and Codirector
From making DIY crafts to spending hours sifting through racks at local thrift stores, Janette has always been intrigued with taking on seemingly ordinary projects for a creative spin. She is currently a junior majoring in Human Biology and Chinese at the Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College. Her passions range from eco fashion, environmental science to global healthcare. With these interests, she strives to build awareness by empowering communities about their choices as consumers while inspiring others to reuse, recreate and repurpose. She believes that in order for us to fight for a cause that is greater than ourselves, we must start from within and integrate sustainable values into our every day lives.
Melissa has always had strong interests in fashion and sustainability. As a young girl, her grandma taught her basic stitching and she sketched her own designs, and now as a photographer, she styles her models. She’s also committed to the idea of small, positive actions shifting the state of our environment for the better. She’s obsessed with recycling, donates her old clothing, and believes education, awareness, and collaboration are the key steps to building a sustainable future. In her free time, she loves writing, doing yoga and bullet journaling. Melissa is currently a junior at Hunter College double majoring in Media Studies and Creative Writing.
Budgeting and Finance Coordinator (CFO)
Sophia is currently a Junior majoring in Economics and Chinese with a minor in Accounting at Hunter College. Her interests including biking around NYC, listening to music, figure skating, and hanging out with her two dogs. Her passion for sustainability began when she spent a summer teaching English in Taiwan and was inspired by her own students. Their natural respect for the environment is something that can be seen in everyday tasks, and evidently not something that has been chipped away for the sake of convenience. Sophia hopes to spread the message that practicing sustainable values does not have to be an inconvenience.
Media and Photography Director
Fanny was born in New York City, where she grew up with tall buildings, unreliable subways, and people who pretend crazy stuff isn’t happening when it’s happening. She is currently a Hunter College student double majoring in Media Studies and Chinese with a minor in Sociology. She is constantly thinking about the world around her and how she can help people and the planet. She believes that everything great comes from people working together. In her free time, you can catch her reading books, taking pictures (@youngleanphoto), or admiring dogs and people from afar.
Soon-Hee is currently a third-year student, working toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Hunter College. While her interests in sustainable fashion and design have only begun to emerge through the Eco Fashion Expo, she has always maintained environmentally conscious habits. She believes sustainability isn’t only about reducing consumption and limiting waste; it’s also about finding and maximizing the potential in what we have and own. Her hobby in sewing and interest in sustainability have finally come together to advocate for sustainable fashion.
Emily is currently double majoring in Environmental Studies and Chinese at Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College. She loves studying animals, plants, people, different environments, and their interactions and hopes in the future that she can do research and fieldwork with animals or research in the urban ecology of cities. She hopes to promote the idea of everyday sustainability and to help everyone find better and easier ways to remain sustainable (including herself). Her hobbies include hiking, dancing hip-hop, playing basketball, and bike riding.
As a junior at New York University, Dena is studying math with minors in music and anthropology. Born and raised in New York City, she is constantly surrounded by people with unique styles. Growing up wearing hand-me-downs inspired her desire to encourage friends to visit old places for new looks. Having been introduced to the idea of sustainable fashion by Eco Fashion Expo, she hopes to continue learning about ways we can approach sustainability in the fashion industry and work towards a less wasteful future.
Susan is a third year student studying history at Macaulay Honors College at City College. She’s always had a love for arts and crafts. From DIY-ing a statement wall out of magazine collages in her bedroom to working on her embroidery skills, she’s always ready to start new projects. In high school, she was involved in green fashion shows for Earth Day, making dresses out of receipts and old college brochures. EFE reinvigorated her interest in upcycled fashion, not only as a fun and creative outlet, but also as an important aspect of building an environmentally sustainable future. She hopes to spend more time with her sewing machine and break out her knitting needles again.
